Tech with Taste | Hotel Ruby Marie, Vienna
Apprx. Reading Time: 3 minutes
Quirky art and plants placed in the lobby, are the first things we notice as we enter Hotel Ruby Marie. Clear signs instruct us that the reception is on the 5th floor and we’ll be greeted there. We get ourselves and the luggage to the 5th floor via the lift which contains the updates for the day. I notice there’s a movie being screened on the 4th! One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is on for the night and there’s Forrest Gump too playing prior to that.
Friendly smiles welcome us at the reception, informing us to proceed with ‘Check-in’. On putting up a confused expression, the receptionist informs us that if we complete the details on the iPad present and click ‘Done’, our access card will be provided instantly via the slot at the bottom, and that’s exactly what happens! Thick paper cards appear at the slot and we’re on our way to the room number provided on them. I’m also told that I don’t need to check-out! It will be taken care of automatically and the invoice will be sent to my email address!
On entering the door, music starts playing on the iPad and a recorded voice welcomes me to the room! I’m partially surprised and grinning at the same time.
A spacious bed complete with a red ribbon takes centre-stage. There’s a Marshall speaker sitting in a corner next to the bed. However, I’m smiling ear to ear when I notice the terrace. I instantly run to it. Gorgeous views of Vienna lie beyond. I then head to get refreshed and notice the washroom has automatic lights, ones that light up as soon as you enter. I wash up and head down to get a drink.
It’s slowly dawning on me that things here are done differently.
The hotel isn’t just about luxury but affordable luxury or lean luxury. The best of basics taken care by not just people in the hospitality industry but also by Engineers and Architects. As someone from tech myself, I appreciate it more!
There’s a huge terrace garden, filled with exotic plants, more artwork and some very colourful chairs. A wall has ‘The Kiss’ by Klimt and chairs are placed on the side to enjoy a drink or breakfast. There’s also a yoga session going on which guests are free to participate in without charge! I’m told that there’s a yoga room right next to the mini-cinema hall too, that I can use anytime if needed. Or I could make use of the library if I’d like to get some reading done.
My ears perk at the mention of the library and I immediately head down to check it out my myself. Bright yellows and cute spaces and a good collection of multilingual books make the library and I also notice a galley with numerous varieties of tea and coffee that one can help themselves to, in the corner.
Making a mental note to get my hands on a book later I head up again to the terrace. Personalised pillows with inspiring messages and artefacts are placed around everywhere. It’s so comfortable that one could even get some sleep on the couch itself! I get some drinks from the bar which have some very innovative concoctions on the menu and while the others are still getting dressed to head off to the ‘Mozart and Strauss’ orchestra, I take a seat by ‘Klimt’ and enjoy the sunset.
The orchestra is mesmerising and fun with a sprinkling of amazing opera singers and ballet dancers. 2 hours pass by quickly and realising it’s been a long day I head back to the hotel. While there are restaurants in close proximity, as the hotel is located in the city-centre, I prefer to collect a sandwich from the grocery store next door and get a few drinks and head to my terrace to sip it at peace.
As I call it a night, I realise I don’t need to fumble for buttons in the dark if I need to get up later! As minuscule as it may seem to some, it’s after all, all about the finer things in life!
