Hanauma Bay provides a pristine marine ecosystem. Because of the growing popularity of the beach, the authorities educate the visitors about the strict rules and regulations they need to follow so as to not to spoil the beauty of the beach. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a protected underwater park and marine life conservation area to allow marine life to stay undisturbed. The area was protected in 1967 and visitors are required to keep away from mistreating the animals or damaging any coral heads. The Bay is closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day.
The picture perfect Lanikai Beach
Lanikai Beach may be small, but the half mile long strip is worth a visit. The beach is public property and the small path going to the beach crosses upper-class residential properties on the way. The beach is a favourite spot for photo-shoots and thus a bit crowded at times. One can kayak to the islands most picturesque beach offering excellent swimming conditions as an offshore reef keeps the water calm from January to December. Those looking for adventure can reach two small islands which are home to house bird sanctuaries.
The long man-made Ala Moana Beach
Ala Moana Beach lies sandwiched between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. The half-mile long man-made beach is immensely popular among locals and tourists. It is less crowded generally and is protected by the shallow outer reef. Its calm waters are great for swimming, picnics, paddle boarding or taking long strolls along the water. As there are very strong currents, the waters are not right for surfing and body boarding and can be dangerous for swimmers. There is plenty of shade to lay under, in the grassy area of the beach that boasts of multiple restroom facilities and food concession stands. The beach is awesome to see the local body-surfing and body-boarding experts navigating the treacherous shores.
Makapuu Beach Park for the scenic Lighthouse
Most visitors come to Makapuu Beach to look at the scenic Makapuu Lighthouse and the lovely beach side that lies in a small cove with fine soft sand. Dark lava rocks surround the beach, and the lighthouse which stands at the top of the mountain looks like a beacon. Gaze at the large waves crashing against the shore or watch experienced body-surfers and body-boarders ride the waves. You can pull over and take a moment to feast your eyes upon some of the most scenic views of the Windward side of Oahu as you drive around the Makapuu Point Lookout.
